The Tourist - Review

The Tourist the new film starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp is a popcorn flick. Don't go into the film expecting a tense, mend bending thriller because you'll be disappointed. However, that doesn't mean that its not an enjoyable ride with both Depp and Jolie adding a fair bit of humour to proceedings.
The story involves Elise Clifton-Ward (Angelia Jolie) who is playing a cat and mouse game with the police because they are after her husband, the ever elusive Andrew Pierce. Frank Tupelo (Depp) whilst on a holiday to Italy gets caught up in the intrigue when he is mistaken for Andrew Pierce and not only do the police want Pierce but so do the mob.
Depp plays his character Frank, well quite frankly he plays it very straight. Something that Depp hasn't done for a while in a film, which is quite refreshing.
Jolie is good enough in her role, looking demure and quite stunning all through the film, even in the chase scenes.
The other players in the film -Paul Bettany and Timothy Dalton, are good in their roles but don't really have much to work with.
The film tries to play its cards close to its chest throughout but eventually paints itself into a corner where there is no where else for it to go.
Whilst the The Tourist isn't as impressive as the writer and directors name (Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck) it is still very beautifully shot around Venice and uses the location very well.

3 out of 5.
