Review - Sucker Punch

A dazzlingly display of CGI, hot girls dressed like an Anime fanboy's wet dream and a whole lot of style over substance - welcome to Sucker Punch.
A quick breakdown of the plot is a young girl is institutionalized by her abusive stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the mental facility.
Zack Snyder (Watchmen, 300) has created a very stylized world, this time though he has his own material to work with, as Sucker Punch is his baby. The cast of Sucker Punch all do good jobs but its really the girls that have to shine for it to work. Emily Browning, Abbie Cornish, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens and Jamie Chung all put their heart and souls into their characters, making the film a lot more rewarding.
Sucker Punch had the ability to be both a wild and crazy actioner but also with a meaningful story, unfortunately the story comes up just short. Had it matched the action, then it could have been an excellent film and could've connected emotionally as well as being a treat for the eyes. However,Sucker Punch seemed to be a little stifled, whether it was studio interference or a short coming of the film but there were parts of the film that seemed sanitized and there was perhaps a scene or two missing. I am sure that if this is the case, the Blu-Ray may well be worth a look too, if a directors cut is forth coming.
All in all a great escapist film, well worth the price of admission - but it still wasn't quite the knockout it could've been. (See what I did there?)
