Review - Machete

Trying to write a review for Machete is little bit like a food critic reviewing a local takeaway – you know it’s going to be bad but you...

A)     Know what you are in for

        and

B)     Know it’s going taste good!

Machete is Robert Rodriguez’s faux trailer in Grindhouse (or the trailer at the start of Planet Terror - after they split the film....grrr) come to life.
It’s over the top, gory, violent and seedy – everything a B grade film should be.

I’m not going to weigh you down with the plot but suffice to say Machete was wronged some years ago and then gets used as pawn in an assassination plot when he resurfaces – and he wants revenge.

The film has a weird look about it, switching from perfect resolution, to grainy, scratchy and jumpy – (I would’ve preferred it either one or the other but I can understand what they were trying to do) – especially when there is stabbing, cutting or any other Machete related incidents.

The cast is pretty good for a purposely made B grade film – De Niro, Steven Segal (!), Lindsey Lohan, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez to mention but a few with a load of cameos throughout. The acting isn't exactly world class but you know what ........its only a B grade film!

Trejo is pretty good as Machete, his scarred up face and calm but menacing demeanour is perfect for the role. Due to lack of knowledge on the immigration front in the USA, I’m not sure if the pro immigration message especially for Mexicans is heavy handed or not.

So if you are looking for a true piece of straight out B grade action then this is your film.
