Review - True Grit
The Coen Bros have created one of the best westerns in a very long time.
Working from the novel by Charles Portis, the wonderful use of language and the Coen's penchant for accents works a treat, really taking you back to time when, quite frankly it didn't look like it was that pleasant a time to live.
The story centers around three main characters. Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), a feisty 14 year old girl looking for vengeance for her father's murder. Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), the hard drinking, dirty harry style Marshall of the day and Laboeuf (Matt Damon) the Texas ranger who coincidentally enough is after Mattie's fathers killer too but for a different crime.
All the cast are great, even the very odd minor characters, (which is a Coen staple) work really well and everything in this film seems to meld and mesh together really well.
Bridges, Damon and Steinfeld are in top form although Damon doesn't get to do a lot with his character but Bridges and new comer Steinfeld certainly do flesh out their characters with Steinfeld running the show with a superb performance A mention must also go to Josh Brolin as the hunted man Tom Chaney. Despite a small amount of screen time, he really makes the most out of his character.
True Grit is amazing and well worth seeing. It was beautifully shot, well acted and sharply written - what more could you ask for?
